My son is 16 but was (and still is) an extreme child. From the time he was born, leaving the house produced intense crying until he was brought home. When I returned to work when he was 6 months, he refused to have any part of me for about a year. It has just gone from there. Now I am trying to cope with the teen years and here we go again. Is he intense? I am so confused here.

I accept, as who wouldn't, Karen Armstrong's proposition that myth is not an inferior form of thought.

But to put it in the category of "make-believe" doesn't advance things much. The Sermon on the Mount is mythic, but is it make-believe? How about the woman taken in adultery? If people believe those two things happened, are they confused?

(The answer, I hazard, is no.)

Ovid (like Professor Armstrong?) must have been able to understand myth as fiction, being an urbane poet in the most sophisticated city on earth. What about the illiterate folk who taught him the myths orally when he was a boy? Did they "believe" them? And if they did, were they confused?

(For my answer, see above.)

What, come to think of it, is belief?

The good news is that the myth ball does not need advancing. There are no "experts" on myth (despite the hero of The Da Vinci Code being a "Professor of Symbology"), and they belong to people not any elite.

You are so very right. I have 200+ students in my music school and we see them blossom daily because this is what they need to be nurtured in today - and we do that. I so value and appreciate the parents of our students who also recognize AND SUPPORT this in their children.

Thoroughly enjoyed our SHORT time today on CreativityinPlay. I loved Dan's remark "just let me take all the playyyyyy out of that question [about play & humor's role in motivation & creativity) in my remarks" (paraphrasing here)...
Dan talked about play as core to being creative and motivated in a way that is life-giving not just because it seems like it will bring more money or fits into norm....what do you love, have a passion for? The latter "plays" out for the better.

Hi Alan - Though I realize there is much debate being generated from the article, the emphasis in this first half-hour interview is on the idea of "the creativity crisis" and the important role of creativity in education and society as a frame for the radio show, the World Creativity Forum and the National Creativity Network. Our aim is not to debate the finer points of the article here, but to build on the important recognition of Torrance's work and its relevance for society today in the broader creativity field. I hope you will explore the flaws and partial references to research in their main article and the incorrectness of the FORGET BRAINSTORMING article.

Many of us who studied with Torrance and/or have been involved with creativity development have found the main article highly missing leading and extremely overstated and lacking in much more valid researchers to interview.
